Chancellor’s Honor Certificate in STEM

Penn State York’s Chancellor’s Honor Certificate in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), is designed to provide students with the skills they need for jobs in the 21st century. The certificate is designed for high school students taking part in the dual enrollment program. Studies have shown that the demand for students with STEM degrees continues to grow.

Through dual enrollment, high school students can earn college credit while still in high school. A variety of courses are available at the campus for dual enrollment and courses toward the STEM certificate are included. High school students may receive a scholarship in the amount of 50 percent of the tuition for up to 8 credits per semester for the courses in the certificate if they meet program criteria.

Credits earned under the provisions of this program are valid at any Penn State location and may be transferred to another institution in the same way as any other Penn State credits.

Who is Eligible for the Program?

  • High school juniors or seniors with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 and a combined two-part Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score of 1,000
  • Students who maintain a grade of “C” or better in each course may remain in the program
  • Students who have graduated from high school may not participate in this program

Program Components or Curriculum

The STEM credit certificate provides four academic tracks of study: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. All students will take three core courses; MATH 022 or MATH 026, CAS 100B,and IST 110. MATH 026 is required for the mathematics track.Based on their area of interest, students will choose EDSGN 100, BIOL 141/142, MATH 140, or CMPSC 101.


Mathematics testing is required of all students and is used for advising and course placement. The results of this test determine the level of mathematics at which you will begin in the certificate.The test is important for most students since STEM majors require course work in the mathematical sciences.The fourth course is an elective.


MATH 022 College Algebra II and Analytic Geometry (3 credits)
Relations, functions, graphs; polynomial, rational functions, graphs; word problems; nonlinear inequalities; inverse functions; exponential, logarithmic functions; conic sections; simultaneous equations.


MATH 026 Plane Trigonometry (3 credits)
Trigonometric functions; solutions of triangles; trigonometric equations; identities. (Required for Math STEM Track)


CAS 100B Effective Speech (3 credits)
This is a general education course designed to introduce students to principles of effective communication with a specific focus on group problem-solving through in-class activities, peer critiques, and analysis of both process and product. This course is designed to allow students to actively work in groups and engage in self-analysis of their own group processes.


IST 110 Information, People, and Technology (3 credits) The use, analysis, and design of information systems and technologies to organize, coordinate, and inform human enterprises.


EDSGN 100 Introduction to Engineering Design (3 credits)
Introduction to engineering design processes, methods, and decision making using team design projects; and design communication methods including graphical, verbal, and written.


BIOL 141 Introductory Physiology (3 credits )
Explanation of the normal structure and function of the animal body, with special emphasis on human body systems.


BIOL 142 Physiology Laboratory (1 credit )
Experiments demonstrating basic physiological principles, with special reference to man.


MATH 140 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I (4 credits)
Functions, limits; analytic geometry; derivatives, differentials, applications; integrals, applications.


CMPSC 101 Introduction to C++ Programming (3 credits)
Properties of algorithms, languages, and notations for describing algorithms, applications of a procedure-oriented language to problem-solving.

2012 Summer Reading Programs for Children and Adults

 

SAT Prep Courses -

These courses will reflect the new changes in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and review important verbal and math skills assessed in the SAT I. Students will become familiar with the test format and learn valuable test-taking strategies.
